Waitrose & Partners is all about enriched experiences. And that goes for our people – our Partners – as much as our customers. We want you to enjoy your work and share your passion for food with our customers. So we’ll train you, treat you respectfully and then reward you by giving you a share in the profits, for pulling it all together and being part of our success.
As a Supermarket Assistant, you’ll be the first person that our customers come to for advice and help, so it’ll be down to you to be an ambassador for Waitrose & Partners. You’ll help people enjoy our award-winning food retail experience by caring for customers, understanding their requirements, providing tastings and tailored advice on the best fine foods around, introducing new ideas and products, and keep everything running smoothly both behind the scenes and on the shop floor.
We are looking for someone who will inspire our customers to try something different, keeps up to date on food and drink trends, know our products and can make recommendations from personal experience and appreciate healthy eating whilst being aware of special dietary requirements. If you can listen to our customers, build a rapport with them and assist them by making their shopping experience a great one, then you could be who we are looking for.
Whether they are shopping for a healthy lunch, a top up on fresh fruit and veg, the weekly shop or a special occasion, we want every customer to enjoy their shopping experience, confident in our products and confident in our Partners.

Along with your colleagues, including Food Service Partners, Product Specialists, Customer Delivery Drivers, LGV Drivers and Managers, you’ll keep our shops full of inspiring fine food and help us keep innovating and inspire customers with artisan taste experiences fit for connoisseurs and families alike.
You don’t need qualifications to join us as a Supermarket Assistant. It’s your flair for retail, your appreciation of quality produce and product knowledge, your interest in a variety of foods and flavours and how one compliments another – whether you have previous job experience or just a genuine passion and enthusiasm for it – that will mean you take pride in whatever you do, carrying out everything to the highest standards. We look for warm, reliable, team players who can contribute lots to our team and provide great customer service. It’ll also help to be flexible, amenable and able to work at pace on multiple tasks.
We look for these traits in our Supermarket Assistants because this position is unique and unlike any other role in the food retail industry. That’s because as a Supermarket Assistant with Waitrose you’re not just stacking shelves, but a co-owner of the John Lewis Partnership, the largest employee-owned company in the UK.
What does this mean for me?
Co-ownership is a privilege, but it also carries a responsibility – we work hard, because we want to do well. We want people who appreciate what the Partnership difference means and who are willing to do that extra bit more as a result.
How will you make a difference? As a Supermarket Assistant, you’ll ensure that our checkouts are not simply where our customers pay, but also where they get to enjoy a passing conversation with you. You won’t just stock food, you’ll place it with care. And you’ll share your product knowledge with both your team and customers whenever you can, not because you have to but because you want to.
Bring all this and we’ll give you all the training and development you need to have a bright future with us, with potential pathways into leadership and management careers, or lateral shifts to try out different jobs in other areas of John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners.
As a Waitrose Partner, you’ll be entitled to our industry leading benefits. Joining the John Lewis Partnership will pave the way for you to enjoy our annual bonus, discounts at both Waitrose & Paertners and John Lewis & Partners, subsidised stays at our exclusive Partnership hotels, Social Clubs and Societies and even Extended Leave.
As a Supermarket Assistant, you’ll even receive an exclusive benefit with subsidised entry for both you and your friends and family to our Waitrose Cookery Schools in London and Wiltshire. There, talented chefs will help you harness your passion for fine food with classes in everything from street food to Italian classics.
