Annie’s Story

Head of Analytics - Digital & Retail

As a British-born South Asian Muslim woman, my identity profoundly shapes who I am and how I show up at work. I am deeply career-driven, a trait I owe entirely to the strong women in my family. Because of them, I bring strength, independence, a focus on finding solutions and a resilience to change to my career in analytics, a field I’ve worked in for over a decade.

When I was looking for my next career move, workplace culture was just as important to me as the work itself. What initially drew me to the John Lewis Partnership was its vocal commitment to allyship and the genuine importance it placed on diversity.

Navigating the workplace with my multifaceted identity has taught me the true value of allyship, it’s about creating an environment where no one has to minimise their heritage, faith, or values to fit in. It means leading with empathy and providing mutual support.

I wanted to be part of a business that continuously strives to do better in this space, and the Partnership has absolutely lived up to my expectations.

The Partnership also places a major focus on learning and upskilling, which creates a great environment for development. But when I think about my biggest career highlight and achievement here, it isn’t actually about my own direct progression, it’s seeing the progression and success of my team members. Being in a position to support their growth, watch them develop their skills, and see them thrive in their careers is incredibly rewarding to me.

If I were to give advice to a candidate looking to join our analytics team, it would come down to three things:

  • Be your authentic self: Never feel like you have to minimise who you are to fit in. Your unique perspective is an asset.
  • Have confidence: Speak up, share your ideas, and don’t be afraid to challenge things if you see a better way of working.
  • Always strive to learn: Stay curious, embrace change, and always look for ways to better yourself and uplift those around you.
