Using our difference to make a difference
Why Employee Ownership Drives Innovation
At the John Lewis Partnership, we do things differently. As employee-owners, Partners, we aren’t just here to fill a role; we’re here to shape the future of the business.
Because we aren’t tied to the demands of external shareholders, we have the freedom to focus on what truly matters: our customers, our communities, and our long-term success. This unique structure creates a culture where entrepreneurialism doesn’t just exist—it thrives. When you know the business is yours, you take ownership, you see opportunities where others see obstacles, and you drive the initiatives that keep us moving forward.
Here are just a few examples of how our Partners are using that difference to make a difference every day:
Innovating for the Customer
When Glasgow-based Beauty Guide Maggie (pictured above) identified an opportunity to elevate our service, she didn’t wait for a directive. She took her extensive experience and leveraged the ‘Beauty Society’ initiative (which is all about helping customers find the right products for their needs) to build deeper brand relationships. Her entrepreneurial approach—turning brief greetings into full appointments—not only delighted customers but drove real commercial benefit, eventually earning her the Cosmetic and Perfumery Retailers Association (COPRA) Beauty Consultant of the Year award.
Driving Business Growth
Entrepreneurialism at the Partnership often happens where ambition meets collaboration. Last year, our Customer Delivery team didn’t just stick to the status quo. Through the Lead Partner Programme, they identified a clear gap in the market: outdoor living furniture assembly. By identifying the skills and equipment already within the team, they built a business case, pitched it to the leadership team, and launched a new service that has already generated thousands in additional revenue for the business. This project has since inspired a new platform where Partners can propose future delivery service ideas.

Building Genuine Connection
Sometimes, the most powerful innovations are about human connection. When Partner Joanne recognised that customers needed better support regarding menopause, she and Nevin, a Personal Stylist, brought a Menopause and Wellbeing Drop-In event to life. By creating a space that offered genuine care and trusted advice, they didn’t just drive bookings and sign-ups; they proved that being a Partner means listening to our customers’ needs and providing solutions that go far beyond a simple transaction.

Join a business where you can make an impact
These stories are not isolated successes; they are a testament to what happens when you empower people to act like owners. Whether it is launching a new revenue stream, redesigning a customer experience, or simply being there for someone when they need support, our Partners are proving that there is no limit to the impact you can have when you work in a business that you truly own.
