Our Story

We are a 4,000 acre estate near Stockbridge, Hampshire.  The estate was purchased in 1929 by John Spedan Lewis, founder of the John Lewis Partnership, and we have been farming it now for nearly 90 years.  We are the Waitrose & Partners Farm and our produce is supplied to Waitrose & Partners shops across the country. The estate is diverse and our commercial businesses span property, food production, farming, retail and leisure activities.

We care passionately about British farming and the environment and we have been a LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) demonstration farm since 2004.

We are a team of 150 Partners and we practice ‘The Waitrose Way’ of healthy living, fair treatment, treading lightly on the environment and championing British produce.

We are a working farm and we welcome visitors to our Longstock Nursery, Cafe and Farm Shop.  Visitors can also enjoy chalk stream fly fishing, golf and our unique water gardens via prior booking arrangements.

You can find more information on the estate below as well as on the Leckford Estate website.

Living well

We believe that eating well should be enjoyable so that’s why we provide a wide range of imaginative and nutritious choices in our cafe and the products we sell in the Farm Shop.  As part of Waitrose & Partners we are committed to playing our role in providing customers with healthier options. As a team where the majority of us spend much of our time working outdoors we also understand the importance of exercise.

Treading lightly

At Leckford it is essential for us to respect the land that we farm, look after our natural resources and minimise waste. It’s not just good practice but also sound commercial business. Here are some examples of what we do:

  • We use solar energy to power our dairy parlour and harvest rainwater from some of our buildings.
  • Fruit that cannot be sold for eating is pressed to make juice and cider.
  • Spent mushroom compost is made available to gardening customers at Longstock Park Nursery and other organic wastes are used as fertilisers on our farm.
  • In the production of Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil the by-product of cold pressing is an extruded meal in the form of pellets which we use as nutritious feed for our dairy cows.
Treating people fairly

Our ‘Responsible Sourcing Code of Conduct’ guarantees people, animals and the environment involved in the supply, production or growing of products are safe from exploitation. This is something we practice throughout all aspects of what we do. It is enormously important that all animals, environment and people in the process are treated fairly. The estate is an active member of LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming). The organisation aims to combine the finest of traditional and modern farming methods to ensure that they work together, in harmony with the environment.

Championing British

We are farmers and we understand the importance of a vibrant and successful UK farming sector. We care passionately about the role farming plays in food security, local employment, education, environment and animal welfare and here on the Leckford Estate we do our best to play our part.
