Duties & Responsibilities

We are transforming our platform and have an exciting opportunity for an energetic and talented Software Engineer to join our rapidly expanding Waitrose Digital Delivery team.

You will have a passion for software development and be keen to get involved to help deliver solutions iteratively and collaboratively. You will be involved in a number of areas within delivery, with the ambition to continue building your technical skills and knowledge. You will have the support of the senior technical engineers to enable you to continuously improve through coaching and knowledge sharing.

You will have a number of the desired skills being asked for and will want to expand into areas where you are less familiar. You should be an active team member, working in a collaborative way to deliver the desired outcomes as set out by the Product Owners. You will be keen to work with new technology and have the ability to think in an innovative manner to help the team deliver business value.

You should always have a focus on quality, ensuring the technical delivery meets the needs of the business, but is also supportable and maintainable. You will contribute to delivering an exceptional online service for our customers.

Job Requirements

To be successful, you will need to have some of the following skills or experiences. There will also be support to gain additional skills to candidates who are offered the role:

- Agile practices e.g Scrum, Kanban
- Development within a self-organizing and cross-functional agile team
- Techniques such as Test Driven Development (TDD) and Pair Programming
- Quality implementation (supportable, maintainable, scalable and secure) of javascript code, including unit tests.
- Problem resolution of production issues
- Assisting in release management.

Required desirable experience skills and qualifications


Programming languages:
- JavaScript
- React
- Clean modular/component based JavaScript code
- Object oriented or functional programming style code
- Understanding of REST API

Testing:
- Unit, BDD, TDD, functional testing

UI/UX:
- Accessibility, responsive design, mobile design, cross browser development and modern HTML/CSS techniques like HTML5, CSS3 and CSS pre-processors like SASS and/or LESS.

Source control:
- GIT and/or Mercurial

Application Lifecycle Management Tools:
- JIRA, Confluence, Jenkins (or similar), NexusPro (or similar)
