We want all of our Partners to have a good work-life balance and we support flexible working. This might mean flexible or compressed hours, job sharing or shorter hour contracts, where it is possible to do so. Please discuss this further with the hiring manager during your interview.
What’s the role about?
Working in Partnership for a happier world - our shared Purpose that guides us in everything we do and inspires 3 important principles; happier people, happier business, happier world. The John Lewis Partnership is a truly unique business, one that seeks to make a positive difference to the lives of everyone.
As the UK’s most successful omni-channel retailer, E-Commerce is a key part of Our Business - we run two of the busiest websites in the UK, driving a significant proportion of our sales. Our Engineering practice includes 60+ teams, working on everything from Cloud Platforms to Mobile Apps, from E-Commerce functionality to Machine Learning.
Our Engineers work collaboratively and share knowledge, and learning is extremely important to us. We support our Engineers to continuously improve their skills and keep abreast of the latest technologies. This role is known internally as Product Engineer (PL6).

What you’ll be doing?
This is an opportunity to work as a Senior Cloud Platform Engineer within a cross-functional Agile development team. You will be working collaboratively with other highly skilled Engineers creating and improving our cloud-based platforms that are used by the delivery teams building complex, mission-critical applications. The team takes a “paved road” approach, a term coined by Netflix to provide features that benefit the many Engineers that utilise these platforms, by evolving its capabilities and tailoring them to both Our Business and Engineering needs.
As a Senior Engineer you will have responsibility for the development approach and will strongly influence how the platform evolves to meet business needs. You will also use your knowledge of Engineering to support shaping of new projects and support the professional development of less experienced developers. You will work with a diverse range of technical and non-technical stakeholders which will require strong communication skills.
There are opportunities to become a people manager for your fellow engineers if that is something that appeals to you.
Ideal candidates will have excellent Software Engineering skills with a track record of working in teams delivering flexible cloud-based infrastructure solutions that are scalable, secure and performant. Successful candidates will have passion for using technology to deliver outstanding and innovative solutions.
What you’ll already have:
Experience working with one or both of Google Cloud Platform (johnlewis.com) or Amazon Web Services (waitrose.com), and in particular those cloud services which are used to run Microservices at scale.
Managing infrastructure as code, with a Software Engineering mindset.
Comfortable with the use of Docker & Kubernetes.
Use of languages such as Python or Golang to automate configuration and extend platform services.
A solid grounding in designing and building distributed systems for reliability and security.
Led on implementing cloud-native solutions to provide observability for the platform and the services that run within it.
Well-versed in the Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery practice, and experience of using supporting tools to help it work effectively for many Engineers.
Familiarity with Agile development methods such as Scrum or Kanban.
What else you could bring:
Specific use of some of the following languages and tools is very helpful:
Google Kubernetes Engine or Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service
Grafana & Prometheus
Elastic & Kibana
Where will you be working?
We have a blended hybrid approach of working from our offices and a remote UK location. You should plan to be working remotely for approximately 60% of the month. However in practice, time in the office is a decision made within your team, and may mean that you do not come into the office for weeks or months at a time, unless you choose to.
We have opportunities linked to both our John Lewis Head Office in London Victoria and Waitrose Head Office in Bracknell, Berkshire.
What benefits do we offer you?
We believe in rewarding our Partners for their time and energy. Find out about the benefits of working for the Partnership
