Duties & Responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced Full Stack Principal Software Engineer to lead the re-platforming of Waitrose into a Digital Business here at our Head Office in Bracknell.

Waitrose and the John Lewis Partnership has ambitious plans to grow it's internal engineering capability. We have started our transition into the cloud moving away from legacy on premise technologies, making heavy use of K8, Serverless and NoSQL. We now need an engineering practitioner to join the Partnership and help us complete the microservices transition.

It will be your responsibility to create (and lead) strong and successful engineering teams ensuring that they are as empowered and effective as possible. Job Requirements

The Lead Engineer provides senior representation of engineering in delivery decisions, making sure that the engineering competencies stay close to the delivery issues of the day as well as the laying down of foundational capabilities. Additionally, you will provide leadership for our efforts to optimise engineering whilst delivering cross-engineering team coordination, ensuring that lines of communication are healthy ensuring that any issues arising as a result of executing agile at scale are handled effectively.

Required essential experience skills and qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must have the following experience/skills:
- Passionate about technology with a keen awareness of current IT trends and the ability to see the potential application of new technologies to drive business value.
- A track record of successful delivery of scalable web applications, meeting the key business objectives in a robust, scalable, cost effective manner.
- Ability to make the right decisions under pressure, especially in messy, real life crises, where none of the available options are attractive.

Technical skills:
- Programming languages like OO and Functional e.g Java / Scala / Kotlin
- Experience of Single Page Applications based on JavaScript frameworks like React, Angular etc.
- Cloud technologies (AWS / GCP)
- NoSQL / RDBMS e.g Dynamo , Postgres
- Architectural styles (RESTish, Micro services)
- Working practices - Knowledge and experience of agile frameworks and practices: Scrum/Kanban, BDD/TDD, DevOps, Continuous Integration & Delivery, Pair Programming etc.
