Duties & Responsibilities

We are currently looking to recruit an enthusiastic Marketing Planning Lead for Activation on a fixed term contract basis; to provide maternity cover for the partner in the permanent role.

This is one of three planning lead roles that work together across our three business horizons. This role will be responsible for overseeing the activation of the entire marketing plan for John Lewis & Partners, ensuring our marketing plans are turned into inspirational and actionable briefs and programmes of work, on time, within scope and on budget, on a half yearly cycle. Working closely with the marketing senior leadership team, finance, customer insight, procurement and our agencies, you will lead a matrix team to ensure activation meets our initial strategic objectives, is adapted where necessary to respond to feasibility or tactical changes, and provide unbiased 360 recommendations based on insight and commercial opportunity. You will be the central marketing point of contact responsible for ensuring the strategic plan is activated in an inspiring, budget conscious and timely manner across all teams. You will provide regular updates to the marketing and leadership teams at the key milestones across the activation process and report on each activation cycles performance with recommendations on KPIs and continuous improvement.

You'll represent marketing best practice across a full channel mix and work closely with other planning roles across the wider business, especially within the John Lewis & Partners Customer directorate and Waitrose & Partners planning team. You will have a close working relationship with our agencies and in-house creative teams as you guardian the process, scope and quality of our marketing activation.

Job Requirements

Passionate commercially minded, agile planner, comfortable with ambiguity, working at pace and under pressure. Broad knowledge of contemporary marketing activity including but not limited to advertising, social, digital, CRM, performance, own channel editorial, trade marketing and brand partnerships. Role models customer first, data-led decision making within Marketing and the wider business to ensure our activation plans are optimised with an entrepreneurial spirit. Strong communicator, not afraid to challenge and able to represent Marketing with authority outwardly at senior level meetings.

Required essential experience skills and qualifications

- Clear evidence of managing a full marketing mix activation plan for a high profile, complex consumer brand (eg. multiple verticles or brands)
- Managed multiple briefs and programmes of work that ladder up to an overarching objective
- Strong commercial awareness, numeracy and problem solving skills
- A good understanding of the entire marketing mix, levers for growth and investment dynamics
- Examples of ATL, in-house and digital marketing experience
- Success in leading and influencing cross-functional matrix teams
- Clear evidence of outstanding planning and budgeting experience (+£10M)
- Great attention to detail and ability to handle fast paced complexity and change
- Excellent at motivating big teams to perform at their best, building relationships with all levels and the ability to influence creative, media and in-house stakeholders to maximise impact and value
- Strong Google Sheets/Excel and Google Slides/PowerPoint skills
- A passion for creating the conditions for best in class marketing activity to thrive
