Duties & Responsibilities

As the UK's most successful omni-channel retailer, e-commerce is a key part of our business - we run one
of the busiest websites in the UK, driving a significant proportion of our sales. We have 30+ interdisciplinary delivery teams, each arranged around a business goal, working on everything from Cloud platforms to mobile apps, from e-commerce functionality to machine learning.

We're looking for Engineering Managers with a strong technical background to support and coach our software engineers and help drive technical initiatives that improve our engineering practices. Engineering Managers are separate from delivery teams. Each manager is focused on improving the performance of c20 engineers who will be working across more than one delivery team.

Learning new skills is extremely important to us. Engineers are expected to continuously improve their skills and keep abreast of the latest technologies and techniques regardless of their experience or job grade. You will play a key role in giving engineers the support they need to succeed with their learning goals. This may be through helping with feedback, regular 1 to 1s, pair programming or working with delivery teams to find assignments for engineers that will offer them opportunities to grow new skills. It will be just as important for you to keep your own skills fresh by working as a hands-on engineer on a delivery team from time to time.

You will also play a leading role in ensuring we have active communities of interests and initiating
activities such as hackathons or internal tech conferences. As well as nurturing the engineering talent
already working with us, you will also play a key role in how we attract new talent to our organisation to
help grow our engineering capability.

*Please note that within the John Lewis Partnership, this role will be known as Product Engineer ITL6*

Job Requirements

Ideal candidates will have experience of managing and improving the performance of high calibre software engineers. You must have a strong hands-on software development background with an excellent understanding of engineering concepts such as Continuous Delivery, DevOps and Lean/Agile practices.

You will also have experience of working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders such as Engineering Leads, Programme Managers and Recruitment teams.

*Please refer to attached job description for further information regarding duties and requirements*

Your particular technology stack is less important to us than your general software engineering skills and ability to apply those skills in different technical contexts. Our engineers are currently centred around the following skills and ideally you will have experience in one or more of these:

- Server side development. We mainly use Kotlin for any new work.
- UI Development. We currently use React.js for a lot of our applications.
- iOS App Development.
- Cloud technologies . We use Google Cloud Platform as our default infrastructure platform.
- Data Engineering. This is evolving rapidly but our engineers in this area rely heavily on Python and use Google BigQuery.
