What’s the role about?
Providing thought leadership across the John Lewis Selling teams, including johnlewis.com will be challenging, fascinating and rewarding. You will be responsible for establishing the Partnership's commerce technology strategy into the John Lewis brand and across all channels (physical and digital).
You will help to inform the thinking of senior stakeholders to meet key business and technology challenges. You’ll influence the product backlog and determine how the technology strategy will be achieved for our selling channels.
We are looking for a highly-experienced enterprise architect with a deep understanding of digital commerce, who is capable of inspiring and empowering teams of architects, engineers and product owners to deliver compelling customer propositions that maximise the potential of our great brand, and the digital and physical experiences we can offer.
What you’ll be doing as an Enterprise Architect:
The JLP Architecture Team is part of the Technology & Change (T&C) Division which supports approximately 70,000 employees, 360 stores, a turnover of over £11bn, and a transformational IT expenditure in excess of £200m pa.
Working for the Lead Enterprise Architect (Selling) you will enjoy freedom and latitude to:
To accelerate the Partnership’s digital transformation through the enablement of business agility, data-driven decision making, and extensible capabilities;
To increase the value T&C brings to the Partnership through improved operational efficiency and management of technical debt;
To ensure best value of technology investments in the portfolio by linking business outcomes with situational awareness, providing the parameters within which technology decisions are made to maximise Return On Invested Capital (ROIC);
To demonstrate the 'shareholder value' of IT to the wider business, informing near-term vs long-term investment trades;
Lead the Solution Architects in your team, providing Partner direction and development as well as ensuring operational efficiency.
What you’ll have:
Impactful Selling Architect:Extensive experience and deep understanding of multi-channel Digital Commerce and Enterprise Architecture. Extensive experience generating and pitching proposals to Senior IT and Business leadership.
Co-Ownership:Demonstrate a commitment to the principles of co-ownership and collaboration to achieve better outcomes for our business.
Continuous Profession Development:You’ll have played an active role in the development of an effective Architecture function and in developing your personal and professional skills and capabilities.
Critical Influence:Proven ability to empower and influence others to make decisions, resolve challenges and deliver outcomes that are in line with the strategy. Work across the business to set strategy and outcomes that deliver change at scale.
Strategy Development & Strategic Planning:Experience working with teams across the enterprise to create, inform and provide input to strategy creation, development, and implementation. Experience developing the company Technology Strategy and in directly influencing domain business strategy so that the business and technology strategies are mutually supportive.
Commercial & Contract Acumen:You’ll advise and consult on the commercial and contractual implications of existing or new obligations. You’ll consult on contractual terms of technologies and business services being procured or used within your domain and the impact of change both commercially and contractually.

Business Domain Knowledge:Understand how the business capabilities that support JLP or a Product and Platform operate with reference to marketplace good practice.
Understand the capabilities and processes that support the business and how this differs from our competition and the likely areas of competitive advantage or improvement.
Management of Risk, Policy & Legal Compliance:Understand and advise on how best to support internal and external policies, whilst managing risk levels, costs and complexities.
Advise on current and future impacts of changing policy or legislation and the impacts or opportunities that this presents JLP.
Support senior stakeholders in making nuanced judgements on cost, complexity and risk.
Sequence Change to Deliver Incremental Business Value:You’ll have established credible roadmaps to drive change in business or technical capabilities that maximise business benefit and cost of ownership.
You’ll have influenced business ambition to ensure that roadmaps to drive change in business or technical capabilities maximise business benefit and cost of ownership.
Assure Architectural Integrity and Strategic Alignment:You’ll signal intent, set direction and deliver outputs that are aligned to ‘Architecture Guardrails’, providing the framework for sound design decisions to be made that are also aligned to the Partnership strategy.
You’ll have experience influencing business ambition to ensure that roadmaps are aligned with the intent of Architecture Guardrails and take accountability for the quality of design work within your domain.
Monitor and advise on current technology, retail and socio-economic trends:You can evidence how you stay up to date with trends and shifts in technology, retail and the wider world, and set this understanding against the business or technology context within which you are working.
You’ll consult internally on trends and shifts in technology, retail and the wider world, influencing technology and business decisions to support JLP strategic aims.
