What’s the role about?

Do you aspire to have a career as a Chef? If so, this is an amazing opportunity to learn to become a professional Chef within the John Lewis Partnership as part of out Chef Academy.

We’ll give you all the training you need to kick-start your career. You’ll gain the qualifications you need to do the job and the opportunity of securing a permanent Chef role with us at the end of your 12 month apprenticeship.

We are looking for a number of Apprentices to join our team based at Odney. You will work alongside various skilled Partners within our 4 kitchen areas where you contribute to the daily running of a kitchen whether that be for events such as weddings, set daily menus or 3 course meals for our hotel guests. You will be well supported by our skilled Partners to help you through the programme and put into practice what you learn. Once qualified to full Commis Chef position at the end of the apprenticeship, there are opportunities to progress through the ranks from Chef de Partie to Sous Chef. Many of our current chefs have worked their way up through the ranks from Kitchen Porter to Head Chef!

The training will be based in our beautiful hotel in Odney in Berkshire, however there will be opportunities to work and train at other Partnership locations, including Leckford in Hampshire, Ambleside in the Lake District, Bala in Snowdonia National Park and Brownsea Castle in Dorset, as well as our head offices in Bracknell and London.

What will you be doing?

  • Work as part of the Catering team to produce and deliver the hotel food we offer

  • To add value to the efficient and profitable running of the kitchen in order to achieve your business and personal objectives

  • Responsibilities vary day to day from kitchen porter activities to event catering

  • Experience the running of 4 kitchens across our hotel

  • Work in accordance with food hygiene policies and legal compliance 

  • With the help of senior chef’s you will work towards completing City & Guilds diplomas in professional cookery, BTEC HNC in professional cookery as well as Level 2 and 3 qualification in Food safety and hygiene.

  • Institute for apprenticeships and technical education and professional Assessment

  • Passion for food

  • Ability to adapt to 4 different kitchen/menu styles

  • Previous experience in a kitchen setting
