My experience of the JLP Application Process

Hi all, I’m on the 2016 Technology Graduate intake at the John Lewis Partnership; yes, it is possible to make it all the way through to the end of the application process! You’ve made it this far with your research, so you’re on the right track. Hopefully this post will give you an insight into how I found the Application Process, whilst also sharing some helpful hints and tips along the way…

From my personal experience, I know how daunting it can be applying for a role when you feel as though you’re a long way from actually getting your feet through the door. But honestly, don’t let this put you off… just give the application your best efforts, and take it one step at a time. Remember to be true to yourself throughout the process – it’s your personality and experiences that are going to shine at the end of the day.

Like many other grad schemes, there are a number of stages to the application process:
1. Initial Application, 2. Video Interview, 3. Assessment Centre and 4. Final Interview.

For me, it was the Video Interview stage that I found most unnerving, as I prefer to interact with people face-to-face. This interview style can be uncomfortable, as it requires you to record your answers to a number of questions within a set time-limit. Despite my concerns, I found that the John Lewis process was clear and fair. I was given the opportunity to complete a number of practice questions, which made me feel much more relaxed when it came to recording the real thing. After the Video Interview stage, I was invited to an assessment centre. I had heard a lot of rumours about how stressful these events can be, so naturally, I was really nervous. Yet when the day came it completely took me by surprise. We were treated really well from the moment we arrived, and were given time to socialise with the other candidates which helped me to relax. The assessments were actually really interesting, and were spread evenly across the day, so there was plenty of time to have a break and refocus. I can honestly say that I walked away from the day having enjoyed the challenge…definitely not what I was expecting!

Anyway, enough from me – time to start submitting your own application. Good luck and hopefully see you next September!

Top Tips:

  1. Do your research – know the Partnership inside out, but also to do some research on current competitors. Your knowledge and passion on the area will really show!
  2. Stay calm – remember that the assessors aren’t trying to trick you, and want to see you perform at your best.
  3. Take a look at for more details on the application process.
