Partner and Personal Stylist Heather, started her journey in the Partnership working in the hospitality department. After being successful in her application for a Visual Merchandising position she hasn’t looked back!
I applied to work for John Lewis & Partners through the Job Centre, in 2016, the new store in Chelmsford was built and I started my John Lewis career in their Catering and Hospitality department. It was working in catering where I learned skills in food preparation and gained a level 2 qualification in Food Safety. I enjoyed the busy pace of working front of house in the café, greeting the customers, and working within a close knit team.
After just three years I was ready to further develop my skill set when I was successful in applying for a Visual Merchandising position. Within ‘VM’ the entire store opened up to me and I was able to create displays across all departments from dressing fashion mannequins to home design sets. Brand knowledge and visual display techniques are some of the many skills I learned from the very experienced team I had joined and I continue to use these techniques both at work and at home. Working within a department store inspires all aspects of day to day life.
“For all life’s moments.”
Having soaked up as much knowledge as I could, I took it with me to the Menswear department where I truly found my calling. Taking advantage of the training provided by John Lewis and our departments ‘Product Specialist Partner,’ not only have I a more in-depth understanding of fashion but it has sparked my passion for tailoring. So much so that I am now a go-to Partner in this area and I train new Partners in the Menswear department.
Helping customers on the shop floor find a perfect fitting suit for a special occasion, or a knock-out outfit, or even a great gift and knowing that the customer genuinely appreciates my work brings me great joy.
“Because for us, it’s personal.”
Last year, I was successful when applying for a grant and John Lewis paid £1,000 towards an external styling course. I now have a Diploma in Personal Styling and new expertise to give excellent service to my customers.
I have had a great experience working in a department store, and along the way, worked with many experienced Partners of whom I have learnt a great deal from. This has helped me grow as an individual and to propel my career as a John Lewis Partner.
At the John Lewis Partnership, we want every one of our Partners (employees) to find their happier way of working, like Heather. Find out more about Personal Styling careers at John Lewis and the incredible benefits of being a Partner in the Partnership by exploring our careers website JLPjobs.com.
