What does it mean to be a Partner in the John Lewis Partnership?

You may have seen the term ‘Partner’ a lot when hearing about the John Lewis Partnership. But what does it mean exactly?

Put simply, when we refer to Partners, we’re referring to all of those who work in the John Lewis Partnership, our employees. In April 1950, our founder, Spedan Lewis, signed the Second of two Trust Settlements which effectively gave the Partnership to the people who work in it. Transferring all his remaining shares and his ultimate control to the trustees (employees). An incredibly radical way of building a business in the 50s. So unique in fact, we remain the biggest co-owned business in the UK to this day.

From an early age, Spedan believed in a unique kind of business. Not only one that was co-owned but one that also sought to make a difference in the world.

Fast forward to today and Our Purpose remains at the heart of our business. In 2022, Our Purpose was refreshed and now plays an even more fundamental part in our business decision-making.
