Keeping IT in-house
“Retailers should stick to retailing and IT should be left to IT people.” So goes the argument in favour of outsourcing IT services to experts with the necessary skills. But it’s not one that we share at the John Lewis Partnership as we continue to keep a strong core of our computing in-house – although we supplement this with some contracted resources to provide extra capacity and to cope with unusual workload peaks, and with specialist suppliers to help us develop and support specific technologies where we have limited skills.
We don’t put retailers and IT specialists into different boxes. We are retailers with IT understanding – something you’ll hear more than once if you join the Partnership. Essentially, this means that our IT people are first and foremost retailers with commercial focus, working closely with many other areas of the Partnership and using technology as a means to beneficial business ends.
